Exceeding Great and Precious Promises
By Bill Sealy

2 Peter 1:4

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

Introduction
We must understand up front that these exceeding great and precious promises are to God's Covenant People. They are conditional. Peter seems to underscore these promises of God by saying, "Exceeding great and precious promises." How blessed are we to be in position to receive such promises!

  1. God's promises to Israel, His Covenant people:

"Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth [is] mine:" Exodus 19:5

  2. Jesus promised His Israel, the church today, the Israel of God, that He would be with them to the end of the age, on condition that they make disciples, baptize and teach them "all things whatsoever I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:18-20).

  3. Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit to His Church, His Covenant people, who were assembled together in one place, in one accord, fellowshipping in the Apostles' doctrine (Acts 2:1, 2).

  4. Jesus Promised to give the Holy Spirit to them who obey Him (Acts 5:32). Those baptized believers who do not obey Him do not have access to the Holy Spirit's leadership, power, presence and illumination.

  5. Jesus Promised the saints royalty. They will reign on the new, cleansed, purified earth.

"And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth" Revelation 5:10

  6. Jesus promised the saints of God, if they suffer with Him, they can reign with Him in His kingdom, over the new earth — some over ten cities, some over five cities (Luke 19:17-19).

  7. Jesus promised to give aionion life to the saints in the age to come (Romans 2:7):

"To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life" (High Quality Life).

  8. Jesus promised saints of God a glorified body in the resurrection, a body like His (Philippians 3:21):

"Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."

  9. Jesus promised His saints can be partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4):

"Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

  10. Jesus promised His saints all wisdom, spiritual knowledge and understanding (Colossians 1:9)

"For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding."

  11. Jesus promised His saints a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness (2 Peter 3:13):

"Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."

  12. Jesus promised His saints who do His commandments the privilege of entering through the gates of the city. Verse 15 speaks of spiritual dogs and spiritual whoremongers, or those that co-mingle with the non-covenant Gentile religions in this life.)(Revelation 22:14,15):

"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie."

  13. Jesus promised His saints, in that Day of the Lord, to be in His presence (1 Thessalonians 2:19):

"For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?"

  14. Jesus promised His saints the right to the tree of life (Revelation 22:14)

"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

  15. Jesus promised His saints immortality (1 Corinthians 15:51-54):

"Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory."

"To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life." (High quality life) Romans 2:7

  16. Jesus promised his saints the earnest of our inheritance (the down payment) (Ephesians 1:13, 14):

"In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory." (Also read 2 Corinthians 1:21, 22).

  17. Jesus promised to give his saints power over the Gentile nations who walk in the light of the holy city, new Jerusalem (Revelation 2:26):

"And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:"

  18. Jesus promised faithful saints a crown of glory (1 Peter 5:4): "And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away."

Conclusion
  1. ALL THESE PROMISES ARE TO THE ELECT. ONLY THE FAITHFUL WILL SUFFER WITH HIM (Romans 8:17):

"And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together."

  2. Only faithful saints will be called sons of God. (John 1:12):

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:" John 1:12

"To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." Galatians 4:5

  3. Election has to do with brideship, adoption, sons of God, glorification, priesthood, kingship, immortality. In the Old Testament God called Israel Mine Elect (Isaiah 45:4):

"For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me."

  4. The Elect ones have sown to the Spirit and will have a spiritual body like Christ (Galatians 6:7, 8): "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting."

"Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption." 1 Corinthians 15:50

  5. The unfaithful, who sow to the flesh, will reap a blood life body, and walk outside the holy city, and be ruled over. Election is limited to the Israel of God, the church today (Galatians 6:16):

"And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God."

  6. Exceeding great and precious promises are to and for the elect ones (the church). This is a matter hinging on faithfulness or unfaithfulness.

Note: Brother Bill Sealy (now deceased) was a dedicated and faithful brother. He may get on your nerves as you read his writings, but then maybe you have been provoked unnecessarily. I asked him for this article after reading a copy of it. It shows a lot of study. Brother Bill used to spend many dollars and much time creating, printing, and mailing out many articles. It gives us an opportunity to test our thinking. Prophecy is not always as clear as we might like. God's Word is for all of us and each of us will give account for our attitude toward it.
